Medication
Taking certain medications has been linked to causing dry mouth, an oral condition caused by a reduction of saliva production. Other conditions associated with taking medication can include chronic thirst, an overly sensitive tongue, and difficulty speaking.
The best way to avoid dental/oral problems caused by medication is to consult with your physician before he or she prescribes any medication.
Antibiotics
Patients who suffer from certain cardiovascular (heart) conditions or patients who have a compromised immune system could be at risk for an infection or bacterial endocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) resulting from dental treatment. If you suffer from a heart condition, please inform our office before proceeding with your dental treatment. You will be prescribed an antibiotic in order to prevent any unnecessary problems or complications.
Heart Disease
Patients with periodontitis (persistent gum disease) are at an increased risk for heart disease. Some studies even suggest that gum disease can be more dangerous than other known heart disease factors such as tobacco use.
In order to help avoid periodontal disease that could lead to heart disease, it is very important to practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing, rinsing, and flossing daily as well as attending regular check-ups with the dentist.
If you haven’t seen a dentist for a while, please call our office today to schedule your next dental appointment. We will do all we can to help maintain your oral health and prevent periodontal disease.
